In the face of world recession and gargantuan plans by town centre developers and Supermarkets it’s just brilliant to see small independent shops determinedly opening in Macc and adding to the character and unique flavour of the town. This week we’ve sipped a great coffee in the new Monocle Deli on Chestergate and bought local greens and rhubarb in the old Cotterils butchers shop on Park Lane . Whilst it was sad to see the demise of an old Macc butchers, it is heartening to see the opening of ‘The Corner Plot’. Determined to give them regular support. As someone said today ‘we are bringing our kids up here and don’t want to live in a town with tumbleweed’. Says it all really.
Have finally got our hands on the brochure for this year’s Barnaby Festival. Beautiful design and completely packed with brilliant things to do on 21-24 June. I love the fact that you don’t have to put your hands in your pockets and spend a fortune to enjoy superb exhibitions, performance, art and music. Personally looking forward to the Boogie woogie piano, and the 1930s film matinee with proper afternoon tea, oh and the Bellissimo bell ring, oh yes and the fete and… and….basically do not even think about going away that weekend and start booking guests into your spare room if you have one.

You are right, if you look at various places around the country, it is the towns with a high percentage of independents that have staved off the effects of the recession. The explanation for this is very simple; money stays within the community, passing from one small business to another, rather than being syphoned off by Tesco or the like.
Independents really are the way forward and they are the life blood of a town.
We are on Chestergate and have been for over thirteen years, yet we still get people coming in who didn’t know we were there. What we need to do is raise awareness as to who is where and who does what. How about putting a directory of local independents on this site?
Best Wishes
