‘Run together, Remember together’ at Macclesfield’s Magnificent Mileathon

Macclesfield man Alex Wright is inviting local families to run together at a charity event on Saturday 6th May to fundraise for the Lily Foundation.

The Magnificent Mileathon will take place from 7am until 7pm at Riverside Park, Tytherington, in memory of baby Ted French who lost his battle with a rare condition called mitochondrial disease in 2013 at the age of five and a half months.

His parents Dee and Gareth are close friends of Alex’s family, so they teamed up to come up with a series of fundraising initiatives over the years, including a mammoth sponsored bike ride back in 2015.

After completing seven runs with ‘401 Challenge’ Ben Smith last year, Alex was inspired by the atmosphere of a group run and it sparked the idea of the Magnificent Mileathon, in a bid to clock up as many collective miles as possible from participants.

Designed as a run (or walk) with a ‘good old fashioned family fun day’ appeal, the event is free to enter though participants are invited to make a donation on the day or get sponsored for their run.

The race location includes a 1.2 mile route that is ideal for beginners and/or children, and a 7.8 mile route offers a greater challenge for more experienced runners.

Participants receive a sticker for each lap completed, which are then placed on a chart to show the sum total of everyone’s efforts.

Commenting on the Magnificent Mileathon, Alex said: “The event is a fun way to bring people together to get active while raising awareness of a really valuable cause. The Lily Foundation funds vital research into mitochondrial disease and supports families going through a very difficult experience.

“We don’t want people to think they have to be an expert runner to take part, it’s more about bringing a strong sense of community spirit and getting everyone involved.”

While the running aspect of the event kicks off at 7am, there will be fun activities and cakes available from 10am, and the day will be rounded off with a barbecue and bar in the evening. Thanks go to Red Willow, The Tytherington Club, Beech Hall School and Homebase for supporting the event.
